Flickr is a useful web site where photos can be uploaded and shared. As a teaching resource students can share photos taken during fieldwork. The capturing of images is common place with students keen to use both their phones and cameras.
Photos and images can also be uploaded by teachers to illustrate points. With many of our students being visual learners, this tool will have many benefits and will enhance learning.
Care needs to be taken with the use of images subject to copyright. Teachers and students who take their own photos own the copyright to that image and can disseminate it as they see fit.
I found the use of the images in the instruction package difficult to manage due to their compression in a zip folder. It would have been of assistance to have much clearer instructions to access the images.
Anne, I too have concerns using Flickr, especially in terms of copyright and child protection issues. The content filters are not safe enough for me to encourage the use of Flickr in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI like the photo you uploaded of the Burj Al Arab - it changes colours at night.
Anne,
ReplyDeleteWhile it is true many students are visual learners I just wonder how much benefit using static images will have on the learning process. I agree students taking photos will benefit them but just looking at ones taken by others well......
Hi Anne,
ReplyDeleteI agree the instructions for using the Flickr package were not clear. I ended up with them all on my desktop - but not the way as per the instructions. Consequently, I skipped that bit and uploaded a photo from my own photostream onto my blog instead.
On the flip side I have found the Atomic Learning tutorials very helpful, if somewhat timeconsuming.
